I Am Legend Bag: Where to Find the Lowest Price
66I remember the day, waaaay back in late 2006 a couple of days after the city marathon, I was walking around 5th Ave and East 27th Street in New York when I was stopped by a burly security guard and told that the road was closed. Moments later a Mustang screamed by in the direction of the Flatiron Building.
It was only much later that I learned that this was the filming of the opening scene to I Am Legend, the 2007 post-apocalyptic Will Smith vehicle. Disappointing as the movie was to me (any fan of the original book will know how they butchered the final scene and overall message of the movie) I couldn't deny that Will Smith looks damned awesome throughout.
Smith's costume was heavily influenced by Belstaff, the English garment manufacturer specializing in waxed jackets and high-end bags. Robert Neville's jacket, trousers and bag were all made by Belstaff, and I guess this would be explained away by describing how Neville raided the Belstaff showroom on Broadway (hey, it's the end of the world. Why not look good?).
Anyway, we're here today to talk about the fantastic leather and canvas messenger bag featured throughout I Am Legend. Here it is...
The bag is a Belstaff Colonial Bag, model 554. The I Am Legend version is mountain brown. The body is 100% waxed, warterproof canvas and the straps are genuine leather.
This bag is extremely high quality, and the price tag reflects this. The Belstaff retails at $429 (like Neville's townhouse, he's living beyond his means.
The Colonial Bag reminds me of some of the daypacks put out by Duluth: high quality canvas construction with a real old-timey, old money feel about them. These are the kinds of bags you pass on to your children, and they're still in working order three generations down the line.
If your budget allows, the I Am Legend bag is well worth the investment. Belstaff was born in the north of England around the same time as my father (and within a few miles of each other, at that) so I have a lot of Belstaff gear passed down to me, every piece of which is in the same excellent condition as the day the final stitch was made.
